The Egyptian team has long experience in reverse osmosis of salty water and has recently developed membranes made ofa chitosan layer on polyacrylonitrile support: chitosan is well know for its antimicrobial activity, while polyacrilonitrile is selected for its chemical and mechanical properties.

The Italian team has been working for the last 5 years on the production of fibrous membranes combining electrospinning and photoinduced crosslinking processes, also using chitosan which requires a template polymer for fiber formation.

By joining the expertises of the two groups in this common project, we expect to obtain membranes with tuned morphology, porosity, hydrophilicity, thermal stability, and antimicrobial activity which can assure better efficiency and selectivity in the process of water desalination by reverse osmosis.

To this aim the research project focusses on:

The membrane fabrication process using chitosan and polyacrylonitrile, varying composition, electrospinning conditions and photo-curing reaction implemented at Politecnico di Torino
The characterisation of the obtained membranes both in Italy and in Egypt thanks to the complementarity of the techniques made available by the two institutions
The application of the various membranes in experiments of water desalination by reverse osmosis  (Egyptian team) utilizing different salts and in experiments for treating salty oil wastewaters

Moreover, the teams will explore the ability to scale-up and achieve cost effective production of the best performing membranes. Added value of the project is training researchers from both countries in the field of electrospinning and desalination processes by workshops, visits and exchanges. Publishing manuscripts based on the findings of the proposal by the end of year 2 is foreseen.
